VirnetX Wins $439 Million Judgment Against Apple

On January 15, 2019, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a $439 million judgment against Apple in a software patent infringement case brought by VirnetX Holding Corporation. The decision upholds a 2016 jury verdict that awarded VirnetX $302 million in damages, a sum that has since grown with interest and additional litigation-related costs, for Apple’s infringement of “secure communications, including its VPN-on-Demand technology and consumer FaceTime and iMessage software and services.”
