On June 3, 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court announced a decision in the matter of Van Buren v. United States, in which the Supreme Court found that the plaintiff had not violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) by using a work computer’s database system for personal use.
The Court ruled against a CFAA violation because Van Buren was authorized to access the database in question, and determined that one must breach unauthorized access of certain information in order to violate the CFAA.
