New Exemptions to DMCA Allow Self-Repair of Copyrighted Works

    The Librarian of Congress and U.S. Copyright Office adopted new legal exemptions to section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that took effect on October 28, 2018.

    The ruling gives consumers and repair professionals the right to break digital rights management (DRM) and embedded software locks for “the maintenance of a device or system” in order to return the device to its original specifications.
